Why are strangers who plead for help called “beggars”?

The name of a twelfth-century monk, Lambert de Begue, whose followers wandered the French countryside depending on handouts, gave us the verb to beg. When in 555 AD the Roman general Belisarius was stripped of his rank and wealth, he became one of history’s most notable beggars, and his frequent cry, “Don’t kick a man when he’s down,” gave us a maxim for all who are on very hard times. Why is a lazy, irresponsible person called “shiftless”?

The word shift means to change or rearrange, which is why we call those who work during differing blocks of time “shift workers.” This use of the word shift also applies to an individual’s ability to change or adapt. Therefore, if you’re “shiftless” you lack the initiative or resources to change with the circumstances. On the other hand, someone who is “shifty” is too adept at change and isn’t to be trusted. Why is a self-employed professional called a “freelancer”?

The word freelance came out of the period between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, when mercenary knights with no particular allegiance would take their lances into battle for the prince or state that paid them the most money. They were referred to as freelancers by authors in the nineteenth century and operated much like the gunfighters in the American West. Now, a freelancer is anyone who works independently. How did feminists come up with the expression “male chauvinist pig”?

The word chauvinism originally meant excessive patriotism and came from the name of Nicolas Chauvin, a French general who was known for his extreme devotion to Napoleon Bonaparte. “Male chauvinism” became a description of a man preoccupied with masculine pursuits during the 1950s, and the word pig, borrowed from a slur on policemen, was added by the women’s movement in the 1970s. Majalah IM (review)

Posted by dr_iqmal On January - 28 - 2009

Assalamualaikum and Greetings to all…

Just now, I had finished reading one e-book that introduced by my friend (ketuk_angle). It’s a very good e-book. It’s not a joke or I just want to be polite to the publisher. It is for real. There is much information about internet marketing. Inside the e-book also provide for u how to motivate yourself in these types of marketing field.

But there are only 10% of the article are in English languages. I didn’t blame them. It a very good moves to have English article inside. And I hope there will be more articles in English. Or if possible there are two versions, the Malay version and the English version. Of cause there will be lots of work to do. If they want me to help, I would be glad and happy to do so. Well, I’m also not really good in English. Just for helping, I didn’t mind…

So what did I get by reading this e-book? I’ve read the entire article about this field over the internet. But for this e-book, there was nothing like it. That’s what I thought. Why I said like that? There are plenty of reasons why I said that way. This e-book, for first sight look was very cheerful (this is my first time found something like this). When I looking the overview and layout of this e-book, I just wondering. Can I do something like this? Of course the answer is YES!!! If not, how come this e-book can be done such nice like this?

That’s only for the layout. About the content are also very compact with info. For example, the “Soal Jawab” section. For people like me, who are not very good in Cpanel, it was very helpful. For my blog, I just ask my friend to help me do it. With the screen shot also makes the article more helpful. Credits for the author for the nice job he made.

The “audio majalah” also good. Well, I think that the quality of the audio need to be more good. I know that u trying to make it feel “slamber”. But it make the audio sounds like u are just plays with other. It needs to be more proper and more serious.

Overall, what I can say is this is very good e-book to read. I’m sure it takes a lot of effort to done something nice, good and beautiful like this. For those that didn’t read this e-book yet, faster click and get it here. I’m sure u will never regret it. I’m hoping that there will be more English section. This nice e-book must be on world-wide. Not only for domestic user. It can help a lot of people that knows nothing out there.

How did the centre of the song publishing industry become known as “Tin Pan Alley”?

Tin Pan Alley is an actual place in New York City. It’s the nickname for the side streets off Times Square, where for generations music publishers have auditioned new songs. The name came from the late 1800s, when the awful sound of cheap tinny pianos coming through the open office windows of hundreds of publishers was likened to the beating of tin pans.
